10 eye exercises to improve your visual health

Benefits of eye exercises for visual wellness

While it is true that most visual problems require ophthalmological treatments to be corrected, performing a series of eye exercises will always be beneficial to improve our visual well-being.

Although in the face of this type of complications the ideal is to use sunglasses or suitable eyeglass frames, in this post we show you 10 vision exercises mainly focused on avoiding or reducing such a common problem as visual fatigue.

Mainly we must take into account the use of glasses

Despite the help that eye exercises can offer, the use of glasses should prevail whenever we need them.

This is because glasses correct certain vision problems, such as myopia or astigmatism; while visual exercises, although favorable for our eyes, do not improve vision significantly.

Thus, glasses are consolidated as a quick and effective solution that should always be above any type of exercise.

If you need a pair of glasses or are thinking of renewing the ones you already have, here are some of our favorite frames.

Exercise of near and far focus

The near and far focus exercise helps to improve the flexibility of ocular focusing, improving the ability to adapt between near and far objects and, in turn, reducing visual fatigue.

Performing this exercise is very simple. Here's how to do it:

- Close focus: put yourself in a comfortable position and relax your eyes. Then place an object, such as a pen or even your finger, about 20-30 cm from your eyes, at nose level. Look at this object with total focus and observe it in detail for 10 to 15 seconds.

- Distant focus: now, without moving your head, look at a distant object, i.e. one that is about 10-15 meters away.  Keep the focus on this object and its details for 10-15 seconds.

- Alternation: look again at the near object and repeat the focusing process for another 10-15 seconds. Then switch to the distant object. Repeat this alternation between both approaches for 3 to 5 minutes.

The “pigeon eyes” exercise

The “pigeon eyes” exercise helps to improve ocular flexibility and lateral focus, also strengthening the eye muscles and reducing tension. Here are the steps to perform it:

- Adopt a comfortable and relaxed posture.

- Move your eyes slowly to the right, holding them for a couple of seconds.

- Then, move your eyes to the left and hold them for a few seconds.

- Repeat this movement 5 to 10 times in each direction.

Eye massage

Eye massage is an ideal technique to relieve eyestrain and improve eye circulation. Here are some tips on how to do it:

- First of all, wash your hands.

- Then, close your eyes and, with your index and middle fingers, start making gentle circular movements on your eyelids for 1 to 2 minutes.

- Also make light touches on the points around the eyes, such as the inner and outer corners and under the eyebrows.

Tips for relieving eye strain

Although eye massages are already a good practice to relieve eye strain, there are some tips you should know:

- Avoid applying too much pressure: the movements should be gentle and relaxing.

- Massage regularly: do it at least 2 or 3 times a day, especially if you spend a lot of time in front of screens.

- Use moisturizing cream or oil: applying a small amount will reduce friction, thus increasing comfort during the massage.

- Breathe deeply: calm breathing during the massage will help you maximize relaxation.

- Don't rush: perform the massage slowly, without rushing, to fully enjoy its relaxing effect.

Rotation of the eyes to improve mobility

Eye rotation improves ocular mobility and flexibility, reducing, in turn, ocular stiffness. Here's how to perform this eye exercise:

- As always, get comfortable and relax.

- Look straight ahead and begin to slowly roll your eyes to the right, keeping them in this position for 3-5 seconds.

- Do the same, but turn your eyes to the left.

- Then make circular movements with your eyes, turning them clockwise for 5 or 6 repetitions. Then, repeat the action counterclockwise.

- Perform 2 to 3 series of these movements.

“Bridge of the nose” exercise to reduce fatigue

If you're looking for an exercise that will help you reduce eyestrain and strain while strengthening your eye muscles and improving the flexibility of your eyes, the “bridge of the nose” exercise is perfect for you. Let's see how it's done:

- Relax your eyes.

- Focus on a point on the top of your nose, right between your eyes.

- Slowly shift your gaze without moving your head to the left and then to the right.

- Return to the point of focus on the bridge of your nose.

- Repeat this movement from side to side for 1 to 2 minutes.

Aligning the eyes with the focusing technique

To improve the coordination between the eye muscles while reducing eyestrain you should try aligning your eyes with the focusing technique. It is very easy to perform:

- Look straight ahead.

- Focus on a close object, which is located about 15-20 cm away from your eyes.

- Keep that object in focus and move it slowly towards the center of your nose. Remember not to move your head.

- As you move it closer, your eyes should align and follow the object naturally.

- Move the object away again and bring it back into focus.

- Repeat this movement 10-12 times.

How this exercise helps to improve vision

This eye exercise optimizes the coordination between both eyes, thus helping to improve vision.

When the eyes are correctly aligned, the visual effort required to focus on objects is reduced, improving clarity and reducing eye fatigue.

In turn, aligning the eyes with the focusing technique promotes better vision in general, because when the eyes are trained to work together efficiently, the brain receives a sharper and more accurate image

Conscious blinking for dry eyes

Conscious blinking is a perfect practice to combat dry eyes. This type of blinking promotes an even distribution of tears over the surface of the eye, which relieves dry eyes.

Frequent intentional blinking hydrates the eye, improving visual comfort and reducing the sensation of dryness.

The 20-20-20 rule

Staring at screens for long periods of time can lead to eyestrain and even dry eyes. But we have a trick to combat these problems: the 20-20-20 rule.

This technique consists of taking a break every 20 minutes that you are in front of a screen, looking at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

Eye exercises such as fixation to improve visual acuity

Performing certain eye exercises, such as fixation, helps to improve visual acuity by training the eyes' ability to focus accurately.

A simple fixation technique would be, for example, to look at a small object or a letter at a certain distance for a few seconds, then focus on something closer and alternate between the two.

This strengthens the eye muscles and improves focusing ability, resulting in sharper vision.

Deep breathing

When we think of deep breathing, what comes to mind is a practice as simple as inhaling deeply through the nose, holding this air for a few seconds and then releasing it slowly through the nose.

But did you know that deep breathing is very beneficial for your visual health? Here's why.

Why is breathing considered one of the eye exercises?

Although breathing does not act directly on the eyes, it does have a positive impact on eye health and visual well-being, and is therefore also considered an exercise for the eyes.

Deep breathing reduces stress and tension, which leads to a decrease in eyestrain.

On the other hand, controlled breathing improves blood circulation, promoting the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the eyes. This, in turn, helps reduce the discomfort caused by dryness and redness.

In addition, deep breathing has a relaxing effect on the entire body, also influencing eye pressure, which is noticeably reduced, facilitating clearer visual focus.

We cannot forget about UV protection

While it is true that throughout the post we have focused a lot on eye exercises, another factor we should not forget is UV protection.

Keeping your eyes protected from ultraviolet rays is essential to prevent future eye problems. Therefore, it is important to start seeing sunglasses not only as an accessory that enhances your looks, but as an essential complement for visual well-being.

As we did with the frames, we leave you a selection of sunglasses that we think you will love. Also, remember that in Vytria we have a wide range of sunglasses brands and a catalog with glasses of all kinds: sports glasses, vintage, for daily use, retro, elegant... Take a look and do not miss any of them!
