In general, it is important for adults, children and infants not to be directly exposed to UV rays without protection, but special emphasis should be placed on the importance of protecting infants and children from the risk of such exposure, as it takes a long time for their developing eyes to filter out ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
Just as we are conscious of using sunscreen on our children's skin, we need to be equally aware of the damage that the sun and UV rays can cause to children's hidden health. Besides, they are usually the ones who spend the most time outdoors, playing, at the park or at the beach.
It is true that there are many parents and caregivers who are careful to apply sunscreen on the child's face and on the eyelids. But this skin is very thin and delicate and little by little we remove it by scratching the eyes because the sun bothers them or because of the sea water. Overexposure to UV rays can damage the back of the eyeball, which is why it is so important to choose the right sunglasses for children.
Although it doesn't happen often, it is possible for children's eyes to get sunburned on days when the sun is strongest. These burns cause the eyes to become red, sore, gritty, or temporary loss of vision. The best barrier against these burns are children's sunglasses.
Even in babies this importance of protecting their eyes becomes more necessary, since their crystalline lens is transparent and lets more ultraviolet rays pass through than in the case of an adult.
From the time we are born we go through different stages until we reach full vision at approximately 5 years of age. Children's vision evolves with the sense of space and the stimulation of colors in our eyes and is divided into four stages.
STAGE 1: from 0 to 4 months.
Babies under 3 months old only see black, white and gray and, although they begin to recognize the most familiar faces from birth, they focus on objects at 20/30 cm. Towards the end of this stage they will begin to recognize more colors starting with the eye. That is why it is important to stimulate their vision with sound objects with many colors.
STAGE 2: from 4 to 10 months.
From 5 months babies are already able to see all colors and begin to develop visual depth and eye-hand coordination (although it will be from 8 months when the eye-hand-memory connection increases and it is important to incorporate tactile books that help stimulate this connection). At 6 months they already have 20% of their visual capacity developed.
STAGE 3: from 10 months to 3 years.
During this stage their depth perception, colors, shapes, letters and numbers continue to develop. It is time to buy, for example, an activity center that combines shapes and colors.
STAGE 4: from 3 to 6 years.
In this last stage is when we must stimulate their visual acuity with puzzles or puzzles that reinforce their memory and visual attention. From 5/6 years of age onwards, skills such as reading, or mathematics will have to be worked on.
The reality is that there is no exact recommended or mandatory age for children to start wearing glasses, but it is true that the sooner we buy them sunglasses before their eyes will be protected, especially if we live in areas of strong sun and if the little ones will spend a lot of time in the sun.
That is why in Vytria you will find brands of sunglasses for children and babies, so that they can start using them practically from the cradle, as is the case of Izipizi that also come with wraparound strap that prevents contact with the ears and make them super comfortable to wear, as often the little ones refuse to put them on or are continuously removing them.
Looking for good sunglasses for 3-year-olds? We once again recommend the Izipizi brand, which we have incorporated into Vytria because we are experts in caring for children's visual health. From 9 to 36 months, you will find models in pastel shades with wraparound strap that ensures maximum comfort to that increasingly small baby.
And in sunglasses for children from 3 to 5 years we already find more variety of colors and shapes for our children to choose their favorite.
The most important thing when choosing sunglasses for children is to check that they have a label indicating that they have full protection against UVA, UVB or UV 400 rays, a label that is mandatory in the European Union. That is why the place where you buy them is also important. Remember that at Vytria we work with top quality brands and all our glasses are 100% original.
It will also be important that the child chooses the model that he or she likes the most and that is most comfortable for him or her, and that he or she assures us that he or she will use them. Children are children and most of the time they want to wear them for a little while as a complement and to imitate their elders, but then they don't want to know anything about them. If they choose their favorites, we will have more guarantees (even if we have to fight sometimes).
In Spain and in all countries belonging to the EU, all sunglasses must comply with Regulation 2016/425 of the European Parliament and Council, which makes it mandatory to include on each pair of glasses the model, name and address of the manufacturer; the reference to ISO 12312; and the category and type of lens filter.
Sometimes children are lured by marketing actions and want to choose glasses with their favorite drawings or with very bright colors that are in any store. If children use these glasses without certification, it can cause serious damage as detailed at the beginning of the post. It is their parents and/or caregivers who are responsible for taking care of their health.
Of our most prominent sunglasses brands we have several that make sunglasses collection for children such as Kaleos, Dolce & Gabbana or Oakley, but there are also exclusive brands of children's glasses as the Izipizi or Ray-Ban Junior. Some of the most prominent models are:
Available in two pastel colors with glitter detail that always captivates the most conceited girls. Both are 44 gauge which is recommended for children from 5 to 7 years old.
The perfect sunglasses for the chicest kids. We have them in 5 colors, all of them cheerful and very vivid tones, although there are also those with transparent frames, but they also have glitter! In this case they are 45 caliber and are recommended for the same age, 5 to 7 years old.
We wanted to highlight some sunglasses for babies, recommended up to 9 months and this same brand, Izipizi, also has the following size (9-36 months). This baby model is available in blue and pink with a wrap-around strap to fit their little heads.
Although Ray-Ban Junior could highlight a myriad of options, we have chosen one of the latest models received that represents the children's version of the adult New Wayfarer. In this case with lots of color and most of them have an adaptable strap. They are available in 47/48 caliber, which would be recommended for children from 7 to 10 years old.
